Summer is right around the corner and the E C Drummond headquarters are simply buzzing with activity. After our spring planting frenzy, our crops are growing thick and fast thanks to the mild weather we have been enjoying. At E C Drummond, we take great pride in the quality of the produce that we distribute to our customers nationwide. From perfect potatoes to stellar strawberries, cultivating crops is a science that we have spent years honing and refining. Here we let you in on our secrets to success in supplying premium produce year in year out.

Invest in the ground

Every fruit or vegetable grown at E C Drummond has been under the watchful eye of our experts, from seedlings in hot houses right through to the point of harvest. We believe that you are what you eat, and if our ground is good, then chances are so too will our produce be.

E C Drummond are affiliated with the Soil Association and strive to meet their meticulous requirements to ensure the quality and productivity of our nutrient-dense soil. It is our policy to minimise the use of pesticides and utilise all nutritional inputs responsibly, and we have a soil analysis monitor the pH and ensure that our crop regime is not excessive.

Innovative production

Over the generations, we have learned what works and what doesn’t, and we are constantly looking out for innovative ways to improve the quality of our soft fruit produce.

The latest addition to our tried and tested growing methods is the introduction of table top growing for strawberries. Over the last two years E C Drummond have invested in Botanicoir’s strawberry growbags which provide sustainable, eco-friendly growing environments that do not require soil sterilisers.

Using the bags means that our plants are more mobile, and has enabled us to move a huge proportion of our strawberry production to table top growers. Raising the plants off the ground has led to a marked increase in productivity not to mention improving the working conditions of pickers and reducing the need for pesticides.

Inspecting produce

With a reputation that spans generations, E C Drummond work to protect the name we have built and always go the extra mile to ensure the quality of our produce.

The new packing house facilities are going to be instrumental in our quality control this year, processing an incredible 1600 tonnes of fruit.

Our picking team are trained to inspect our produce meticulously, and hand select only the highest standard arable and soft fruit crops for major UK supermarkets.
